Attorney says City sponsored team names "offensive"

McALESTER — A local attorney says the team names used by a City of McAlester sponsored coed softball league are offensive.

McAlester Attorney Allan Mitchell said he was shocked when he saw the roster which can be viewed at for the softball league he helped sponsor for the City.

“I got very aggravated, I felt I had been deprived,” Mitchell said.

“Something that had been a positive was turned into a negative.”

City Manager Pete Stasiak said although it’s too late to make changes to the roster now, he has taken steps to ensure that names such as the ones being used now, will not be used again in the future.

“All team name suggestions will be submitted to the softball manager for approval before any rosters are put into place.”

Meanwhile Mitchell said he did not withdraw the $500 he donated to the league but he did request that his name not be put on any team uniforms.

“I don’t know how the public feels about this but I know these facilities and the money used for these leagues comes at a sacrifice.” Mitchell said.

“McAlester is an incredible community and I appreciate what the city government does but I don’t think this reflects what they had in mind.”

“I also wonder what the women on the league feel about wearing a T-shirt or being on a team with these names.”

“It’s a sad deal,” Mitchell said.
