McALESTER — A charge of child abuse was recently dismissed for a McAlester man.

Kevin Dewayne Shirley, 38, appeared in Pittsburg County District Court on Friday (Oct. 26) and pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of public intoxication. He was fined $110 and a charge of child abuse by injury was dismissed.

According to court records, Shirley had been accused of choking a 14-year-old girl, throwing her down and hitting her in the face with a golf club.

When the News-Capital contacted Shirley for comment, he spoke at length about issues with the girl’s mother. He also said, “I can pretty much tell you that it didn’t happen. I am not guilty. I’m a different kind of dad; I’ve had to play both roles for so long — I cook, I clean. I would not even spank my kids. I want to know that my kids are well taken care of.”

The charge was dismissed on a motion by the District 18 District Attorney’s Office.
