McAlester High School Winter Guard took state and is now taking names.

McALESTER — McAlester High School Winter Guard took state and is now taking names.

The McAlester High School winter guard has had a very successful season and is ready to take on new members.

“We began with tryouts in late October and began our 7:15 a.m. rehearsals at Brumley gym each day from November through April,” said winter Guard Director Robin Steidley. “We also rehearsed and performed during the majority of Saturdays from November through early April.”

Steidley said McAlester’s team consists of freshman through seniors. Winter Guard is referred to as the “Sport of the Arts;” it requires excellence in choreography, flag and rifle technique, characterizations and dance.

Routines are written to a selected piece of recorded music with no marching band, she said.

Winter Guard and Percussion of Oklahoma is a regional competitive circuit that hosts teams from Oklahoma and Arkansas, Steidley said.

“Teams are judged by five different judges at each competition in dance, ensemble, general effect and technique,” she said. “Some of the teams we competed against included Edmond North High School, Southmoore High School, Collinsville High School and Dickson High School.”

Steidley attributes her team’s success — first place at Siloam Springs, West Moore, Pryor and Mustang, culminating with the state championship at Sapulpa on April 6 — to the outstanding attitudes and work ethic of all team members.

“The MHS Winter Guard captain is Ms. Reanna Bledsoe with assistants Salena Price and Kendra Yoder,” Steidley said.

Meanwhile, tryouts for the next school year’s guard team is set to begin.

A clinic for the fall semester begins Monday and will last until Wednesday at the Lucy F. Smith activity center at MHS, Steidley said. Session are set from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. each day.

Tryouts follow on Thursday in the same location from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

She said no experience is necessary
