Candidates continue race for US Congress

McALESTER — Pittsburg County Republicans have planned two meetings, including one with a visit from a Congressional candidate.

The Pittsburg County Republican Committee plans to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the back room at Angel’s Diner at 1402 S. George Nigh. Expressway.

Markwayne Mullin, a candidate for the Second District Congressional seat, is the featured speaker, said Lonnie Lu Anderson, chairman of the Pittsburg County Republican Committee.

Prior to the 7 p.m. meeting, the Pittsburg County Republican Women’s Club will hold a meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, also at Angel’s Diner, Anderson said.

Mullin, the owner and operator of Mullin Plumbing, is a among the Republican candidates who are seeking the seat currently held by District 2 U.S. Rep. Dan Boren, D-Muskogee. Boren has said he plans to complete his current term, but does not plan to seek re-election in 2012.

Mullin, who said he grew up in Adair County, is among a number of Republican candidates who are running for their party’s nomination for the District 2 seat.

Other Republican candidates include Wayne Pettigrew, a McAlester native, businessman and former state representative for District 39, who announced his intention to seek the Congressional seat while in McAlester on Monday.

Also seeking the Republican nomination is retired U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Dakota Wood, of Claremore, who is a consultant with a Washington-based think tank which specializes in military issues.

Dustin Rowe, an attorney and a former Tishomingo mayor, is also running for the post.

Also, District 14 state Rep. George Faught, of Muskogee, has announced his intentions to run for the Second District congressional seat. Faught operates a family-owned carpet cleaning business.

Although a few names have been floated as potential candidates, so far, no Democrats have come forward to formally announce plans to seek the District 2 congressional seat.
