Two die in McAlester house fire

McALESTER — The McAlester Fire Department received a fire call in the early hours this morning on the 500 block of South 10th Street. Firefighters found two burn injury victims in the front yard of a burning home, fire officials reported this morning. Firefighters were told that two individuals were still inside the house, which was engulfed in flames, according to McAlester Fire Chief Brett Brewer. The victims who were still inside the home never made it out alive, Brewer said.

“When our fire crews arrived,” Brewer explained, “they found two burn victims in the yard. They were transported to McAlester Regional (Health Center).”

The firefighters were informed that there were still two more people inside the burning home, Brewer said. “Firefighters made entry,” Brewer explained, “but due to the rapidly deteriorating situation on the inside of the house, they had to pull out. They had to pull out due to the intensity of the fire and the smoke.”

The medical examiner arrived at the scene and took possession of the two bodies once firefighters were able to extract them from the home.

When asked about the cause of the fire, Brewer said the cause is still under investigation. Just before 9 a.m. this morning, Brewer said, “We are just now getting inside the structure to start investigating.”

On the scene this morning investigating the incident were Brewer, the MFD Fire Marshall and the state Fire Marshall.

As of presstime today, the names of the victims were not released.
