The Drug Warehouse store in McAlester is set to close its doors before the month’s over, the News-Capital has confirmed.
Current plans call for the store to close its doors on Sept. 25, or by November at the latest, according to information obtained by the News-Capital.
Approximately 20 individuals are employed at Drug Warehouse in McAlester.
The expected closure of the Drug Warehouse store in McAlester is the result of the planned acquisition of USA Drug by Walgreens. It’s among 22 stores expected to close statewide as a result of the acquisition.
“Although we have not finalized the acquisition of USA Drug, we are taking steps in anticipation of the completion of the transaction, which is expected to occur in mid-September,” Jim Graham, of Walgreens Media Relations office, said in a statement from Walgreens corporate offices in Illinois.
After confirming that the Drug Warehouse store in McAlester is on the list of stores to be closed, Graham said prescription drug customers will receive letters informing them where their prescription files will be sent.
“Most likely it will be at a nearby Walgreens or USA Drug-affiliate store,” he said. “They will be able to refill prescriptions at any Walgreens and online.”
Graham said in the statement the decisions about store closures were based on several things, “including size of the market and proximity to other Walgreens and USA Drug stores and affiliates.”
In McAlester, the Walgreens Drug Store is at 1000 E. Carl Albert Parkway, a few blocks north of the Drug Warehouse store.
Referring to current customers of Drug Warehouse stores or other stores affiliated with USA Drug, Graham said when a store is closed, all customers will be notified of the location of a nearby Walgreens or USA Drug-affiliated store where their prescription information will be transferred.
“No other action is needed by pharmacy customers to have their existing prescriptions filled at any Walgreens store,” Graham said.
