Tickets are still available for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Remembering the Dream, Continuing the Dream” Banquet set for Jan, 18, organizers say.
The public is encouraged to attend the banquet and the commemorative service hosted by the Pittsburg County Holiday Commission.
The banquet is set for 6 p.m. at the McAlester High School Cafeteria,1 Buffalo Dr., according to organizer Carrie Parks.
The commemorative services are set for Jan. 17 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Triumph Baptist Church, 408 E. Wyandotte.
Deacon Monica Trumele Bailey will be the speaker at the commemorative services, Parks said.
Bailey is employed in the Education Department at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Muskogee.
She is also an ordained itinerant deacon with the African Methodist Episcopal Church under Presiding Prelate Bishop Samuel L. Green of the 12th Episcopal District, according to Parks.
Meanwhile the speaker for the Jan. 18 banquet will be Judge David B Lewis, the first African American to serve on the Court of Criminal Appeals in District No. 5, according to Parks.
Lewis was appointed by former Gov. Brad Henry in 2005.
Also during the banquet, the MLK Unity Choir and the MLK Junior choir are set to perform.
Parks said tickets for the banquet can be purchased from any Pittsburg County Holiday Commission member.
Adults advance tickets are $8 each and $9 at the door; youth advance tickets are $4 or $5 at the door.
