Community Christmas Dinner donations still running behind

McALESTER — Organizers of the Community Christmas Dinner say they are still running far behind on where they need to be on donations to help pay for the annual event.

“We’re at 31 percent” of the donations needed to cover the cost of the dinner, one of the volunteers helping organize the event said Thursday.

He said it costs approximately $5,500 to pay for the dinner and only $1,700 had been donated for this year’s dinner as of Thursday.

Also, only seven drivers had volunteered to help deliver the dinners on Christmas Day, he said.

“We’re less than a week away,” he said, noting that Christmas Day will come on Wednesday this year. In addition to the badly-needed donations, “We’re in desperate need of drivers still,” he said.

Plans call for the holiday meal with trimmings to be served free of charge Christmas Day to any McAlester and Krebs residents who want to participate, with no  income or age guidelines in place. Since the meal will not be served at a central location, but will be delivered to participants’ residences, those organizing the event depend on volunteer drivers to make the deliveries.

Those who would like to help can mail a donation to Community Christmas Dinner; P.O. Box 759; McAlester, OK; 74502.

Volunteers said there is still time for McAlester and Krebs residents to who would like to have the dinner delivered to them on Christmas Day to do so by phoning 918 421-2920.

That’s also the number that volunteers who would be willing to help make deliveries on Christmas Day to call to offer their services.
