Work to begin on Chadick Park playground, other park improvements

McALESTER — Plans for new playground equipment at Chadick Park are swinging forward, with new equipment expected to arrive in the coming weeks.

“This is going to be a huge improvement,” McAlester Community Services Director Mel Priddy said on Friday.

McAlester city councilors voted  unanimously Tuesday night to approve an $81,800.80 bid award to Miracle Recreation Equipment Co. for the purchase and installation of new playground equipment at Chadick Park.

The money approved for the playground equipment  is only part of the package to improve the park, according to McAlester City Manager Pete Stasiak.

Another $44,000 in on-site improvements will also go into the park, said Stasiak, who, along with Priddy and city Chief Financial Officer Toni Ervin, helped champion the project.

The entire project will cost $125,000, according to the city manager, with the new equipment allowing more children to play at one time.

“I think the capacity on the new equipment is 125 children,” Stasiak said.

“Where the existing site is on sand, we’ll be taking it out and replacing it with wood fiber chips that are ADA-compliant,” Stasiak said, referring to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The new playground will include something special for smaller children.

“We’ll build a whole new playground area for children from 2 to 5 years-old,” Stasiak said.

“We’ll also construct a new sidewalk area,” he said.

In addition to the new playground equipment, plans for Chadick Park include the installation of some new structures that could be used by individuals, groups or families.

“We’ll add some picnic tables” as well as some shade structures, Stasiak said.

Work is set to begin at the park while the city awaits the arrival of the new equipment.

“Next week, we’ll try to get the old stuff out,” Priddy said. It’s expected to take from four-to-six weeks to get the new equipment, and Priddy would like to have the site ready by the time it arrives.

Priddy said he hopes to have the project compete by mid-February, maybe sooner, but he noted there could be work delays because of the weather.
