“It was a complete surprise to me,” said Burlene Wilson, McAlester, of her nomination and selection to be the first recipient of the newly-established “Caught Caring” award at the Southeast Oklahoma District Missions Convention of the Church of the Nazarene in Henryetta this past summer.
Firmly ensconced locally in the mission work of the First Church of the Nazarene, 700 West Adams, she’s attended since 2003, Wilson was recognized by the entire district for her work as the director of the children’s mission, in Sunday school outreach, her mission involvement, and her efforts in setting up for regular missionary meetings at the church.
“I was just doing what I thought I should do,” she said. “They noticed, and I didn’t even know they were watching.”
Wilson, whose late husband was a church pastor, enjoys immersing herself in her work.
Remembering to send birthday and holiday cards to missionaries and their families, watching over the children’s mission, and calling to check on the ill and absentees from her church are just a few of the things Wilson does that earned the certificate citing her “Lifestyle of Compassion,” as the reason for her nomination and selection.
