Deputies make arrest in Bache slaying

By James Beaty
Senior Editor

Law enforcement officers have made an arrest in the death of James Nester, a 31-year-old Hartshorne-area man, whose body had been found on Aug. 30 in a yard near Bache.

Billy Floyd Dewayne Carshall, 34, of the Arch area, has been arrested and jailed on an initial complaint of murder, said Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Investigator Jeremy Webb.

Webb and Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Agent John Jones arrested Carshall on Friday at the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Department, where Carshall was being interviewed in connection with the probe into Nester’s death.

The investigation remained under way late Friday afternoon, with law enforcement officers serving a search warrant as the probe into Nester’s death continued.

Because of the ongoing investigation, the sheriff’s office was releasing few details late Friday, such as what sorts of wounds Nester had, or the cause of his death.

Nester was reported last being seen walking north on Bache Road in the late evening hours on the Friday night before his body was found, Webb said.

His body was found between 3 and 4 p.m. on the following Saturday, beside a residence where he did not live, Webb said. Investigators found no link between the people who lived at the residence and Nester’s death, according to Webb.

“We don’t believe the people at the residence knew what was going on,” he said.

Webb declined to comment at this stage of the investigation on exactly how Nester’s body got into the yard at the residence.

Investigators were suspicious from the first.

“We conducted the investigation as if it was a homicide,” Webb said.

The probe is being conducted by the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Department and the OSBI.
