Free forest landowners workshop set Sept. 26

From submitted reports

Forest landowners who would like to implement best management practices into their operation can sign up for the Best Management Practices workshop set for Oct. 2 at the Pittsburg County Cooperative Extension Office in McAlester.

The workshop begins at 7 p.m. and is free to the public, but people need to be registered by Sept. 26. Class size is limited to the first 20 registrants.

“This workshop is designed to help forest landowners with best management practices related to forest operations,” said Craig McKinley, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service state forestry specialist.

Topics for the workshop include Best Management Practices and your Management Plan, Water Quality and BMPs, Forest Management and BMPs, Examples of BMPs in Oklahoma, Streamside Management Zones, Road Construction and BMPs in Harvesting and Landings.

Presenters for the workshop include Darryl Hunkapillar, Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry; David Cantrell, Pittsburg County Cooperative Extension Agriculture and 4-H Youth Development educator and McKinley.

BMPs are an outgrowth of Section 208 of the Federal Clean Water Act, which covers non-point source pollution. Non-point source pollution consists primarily of sedimentation in runoff from landscapes.
