Sorry kids, time to start thinking about school enrollment

Even though it may seem that summer began last week and your little one was born only yesterday, it’s actually time for another school year to start.
Enrollment for the tiniest of students at McAlester Public Schools is going on now. Older students will enroll on July 30 and 31.
Pre-K and Head Start students — those who will be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1 — attend the early childhood centers at Jefferson and William Gay.
Karla Brock, the principal at JECC, said that when enrolling, parents and guardians need to bring: the child, Social Security card, the official birth certificate, verification of income, CDIB card (if applicable) and immunization records.
For more information about pre-K and Head Start enrollment call 423-5963, 423-6229 or 423-8304.
MPS Public Relations Director Debbie Watkins said “Enrollment is a little different this year than it has been in the past. All students — those returning to MPS and those who are new to the McAlester district — can enroll on Wednesday, July 30, and on Thursday, July 31.
“All new students should report to enroll at this time, and it is also important for MPS students who pre-enrolled during the spring semester to report for enrollment, confirming their place in McAlester schools.”
Watkins noted that “the hours on each day vary in an effort to accomodate the various schedules that students and parents may have.”
On July 30, all McAlester schools will be open from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. On July 31, the schools will be open from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
“McAlester High School’s enrollment is more specific and will give priority to each grade during set hours on their enrollment dates,” Watkins said.
“On Wednesday, July 30, freshmen will be able to enroll between 9 a.m. and noon. Sophomores will be able to enroll between the hours of 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
“Juniors are asked to report on Thursday, July 31, between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon, and seniors will be given priority on the 31st, between the hours of 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
“Should parents or students have any questions, they are encouraged to call their particular school on enrollment dates, or by contacting the MPS Administrative Office at 423-4771.”
