Access among issues at planning commission meeting

By Jeremy Higgins
Assistant Editor

The McAlester City Planning Commission met Tuesday night with five items on its agenda.

Two of those items were tabled, one was withdrawn at the request of the applicant and two are being recommended for approval by the city council.

The tabled items included the rezoning of lots located at 525 and 527 N. Main St. This item was tabled at the request of the applicant.

The second tabled item was a request to rezone the southeast corner of Eighth Street and Jefferson Avenue between Eighth and Ninth Street along Adams Avenue. This is the proposed sight for a completely wheelchair accessible apartment complex. The rezoning of this site will not be considered until funding for the project is approved.

A request to close a portion of the alley behind 501 S. Seventh St. was withdrawn by the applicant.

The areas that are being recommended for rezoning includes the lot located at 501 S. Seventh St. Applicant Jason Barnett has requested the lot be rezoned from single-family to multi-family occupancy.

The second recommendation for the city council to consider is a planned development just west of Ten Springs Avenue. The Brookhaven development would be the site of 18 new single-family homes.

The planning commission stipulated that the developer must build a cedar fence along the east side of the development, the homes must be no smaller than 18,000 square feet and must have masonry construction on the exterior walls.

If approved for rezoning, Brookhaven will include one new street and a cul de sac.

The planning commission meets each month on the third Tuesday and its recommendations must be approved by the city council before a property is rezoned. Items from Tuesday’s meeting will not be considered by the city council until the first regular council meeting in August according to Mark Emmons of the planning commission.
