McAlester area CFC earns award

By Marketta Johnson
Staff Writer

The Combined Federal Campaign’s goal is to promote and support philanthropy through an employee focused program. This program provides federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for everyone. CFC is the world's largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign. Pledges made by federal civilian employees, postal employees and military donors support eligible non-profit organizations that provide health and human service benefits throughout the world.

This year the McAlester Area CFC was recognized in Washington D.C. on Friday at an awards ceremony at The White House Eisenhower Executive Office Building following a reception in the Indian Treaty Room. Executive Director of the United Way of Southeastern Oklahoma Yvette Martin and Dana Wofford, human resources specialist at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant were presented with the ward by John Berry, Director of the U.S. office of Personnel Management. The pair accepted the award on behalf of the McAlester area.

Martin serves as the principal combined fund organizer for this campaign. She serves as organizer of the campaign, receives and collects donations, distributes the donations to selected organizations, reports to Office of Personnel Management in Washington D.C. and works to increase the campaign percentages to have a successful campaign. “I work very closely with Civilian Personnel at the McAAP whose employees are the main givers of the campaign,” Martin said.

“In 14 years as executive director, I have never had such an honor. It feels good to know all of your hard work collecting funds to help others is being recognized on a national level. It is my privilege to serve our federal government and our community in such a way that exhibits the highest degree of public service,” Martin said.

“My Washington D.C. trip has been filled with memories that will last me a lifetime. Seeing our nation's history up front and personal makes one feel so unbelievably proud to be an American and living on this great planet,” Martin said.

McAAP and the Defense Ammunition Center has much to be proud of this year. “We exceeded our goal,” Wofford said. “We have 33 key workers doing the footwork and I organize that effort,” Wofford said. McAAP Commander Arnold Montgomery was so proud of the effort that he gave commander’s coins, an honor recognizing those that go above and beyond the call of duty, to five of the employees that excelled in their collecting efforts.

Wofford is proud of the effort McAAP employees made in this year’s CFC campaign. “I was very honored to be there to represent the base,” Wofford said referring to receiving the recognition. “I was very honored to be there.”

The McAlester area CFC increased funds 35 percent over last years totals. The group came in second in the nation among CFC’s it’s size for Increase in Percentage.
