McAlester is once again having to search for a city treasurer, now that David Burke, the current city treasurer, has resigned, effective June 30.
Burke has been McAlester’s city treasurer since March 20. Before that, he was employed with the city of Fort Worth, Texas, as budget manager.
Now, according to City Manager Mark Roath, Burke has accepted a similar position in the private sector in Texas.
“Since being hired, Mr. Burke had assisted me in the preparation of the Fiscal Year 2008-2009 Annual Budget,” Roath said. “As such, I appreciated his hard work in learning our accounting system in a short time to help me with that task.”
Roath said “We will begin the search for a new city treasurer within the next 10 days. But under the new Charter, that person won’t be called the city treasurer. The new title is chief financial officer.
“We’ll consider all applications and we hire on merit. We’ll be looking for the best candidate for the money we can pay. The current salary is $80,000 per year and we’ve got great benefits.
“We offer health insurance, life insurance and a pension program.”
“Until a new person is hired for that position, Sherri Alessi will once again be filling in,” Roath said.
