Savanna tax ballot deadline set for Friday

By James Beaty
Senior Editor

A deadline is nearing for those who need to apply for voter registration in order to be eligible to vote in the July 14 city sales tax special election in Savanna.

Friday is the last day for potential eligible voters to apply for registration in time for the election, said Pittsburg County Election Board Secretary Cathy Thornton.

Voters will be casting ballots on a measure which would raise the city sales tax in Savanna from 3 percent to 5 percent.

An election resolution states the increase would be to provide funding for capital improvements to the town’s sanitary sewer system, for the acquisition of additional land if needed for the improvements and for maintenance, including maintenance of the existing sewer system.

To register to vote, an individual must be a citizen of the United States, an Oklahoma resident and at least 18 years old.

Those who may need to register include those who have registered before but who are not currently registered in the county in which they live. Others who may need to change their registration information include voters with a recent name change, due to a marriage, for example, and those who need to register a change of address.

Thornton said the voter registrations must be postmarked no later than midnight on Friday. Those postmarked after that time will still be accepted and processed, but voter registration for the eligible applicants will not be approved until after July 14, she said.

The Oklahoma Voters Registration Application forms are available at the Pittsburg County Election Board office in the Professional Building at 10 E. Washington Ave., Suite 106, and at most post offices and public libraries, Thornton said.

Application forms are also available at motor license agencies, public assistance agencies, armed forces recruitment offices and agencies serving the disabled, she said.
