Child molestor sentenced to 100 years in prison

By Doug Russell
News Editor

A century. Ten decades. One hundred years.

That’s what the jury recommended for a Canadian man who molested a 10-year-old boy in 2005.

Randy L. Gray Sr., 42, was convicted of lewd molestation, oral sodomy, lewd or indecent proposal or acts to a child under 16, first-degree rape by instrumentation and two counts of displaying pornography to a child under 16.

“It largely came down to a case of ‘who do you believe?’” said Assistant District Attorney Mike Miller.

There was no confession and no solid physical evidence in the case. Instead, there were the victim, Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Deputy Tom Steele and an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation computer analyst on one side and Gray, his wife, mother and daughter on the other.

The testimony of several defense witnesses was inconsistent with what they had said at Gray’s preliminary hearing.

When the crimes were first reported, the victim was able to describe to Steele several pornographic movies he said Gray had made him watch. The computer analyst testified he’d found similar images on a computer seized from Gray’s home.

An affidavit filed earlier in the case states that the images described by the boy were also on some movies seized by officers who searched Gray’s home after the crimes were reported.

Members of Bikers Against Child Abuse sat in the courtroom throughout the trial, lending silent support to the victim and his family.

When the verdict was announced, Judge James Pratt ordered a presentence investigation.

Gray is scheduled to be sentenced June 7.
