Miners named academic champs

From submitted reports

The Hartshorne Miners have been crowned the 2008 Class 3A Baseball Academic State Champions.

Team members who won the prestigious honor are Ben Blankenship, C. J. Nelson, Joseph Morgan, Dalton Nelson, Caleb Collins, Nash McMurtrey, Blake Burke, Ross Rose, Tyler Gwin, Ricky Morgan, Bryson Hall, David Harrel, Dylan Parker, Garrett Grivette, Daniel Sandefur, David Mass, Adam Few and Kenyon O'Daniel.

The OSSAA awards three levels of academic achievement in each sport. The third and highest level is what the 2008 Miners received. The Hartshorne team earned the award as the State Academic Champion. Hartshorne's team GPA for the fall semester, which is the guideline for consideration, was 3.689.

The second level is a Distinguished Academic Plaque, which the Miners received for the 2007 season, given to any team that carries a team GPA of 3.50 or higher and ranked in the upper 10 percent of their classification.

The first level is an Academic Achievement Certificate given to any team that carries a team Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.25 or higher and ranks in the upper one third of their classification.
