One dies, one hurt in mishaps

By James Beaty

A Howe man has died and a Wilburton woman has been injured as the result of separate weekend accidents in LeFlore and Latimer counties.

James L. Ross Jr., 57, of Howe, died after personnel with the LeFlore County Emergency Medical Service transported him to the Choctaw Nation Indian Hospital, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Ross died following a three-vehicle accident which occurred at 11:04 a.m. on Saturday 11 miles north of Talihina in LeFlore County.

Ross was headed south on a Harley Davidson motorcycle on U.S. Highway 271 when the accident occurred, the highway patrol said.

Another driver, Glenda G. James, 72, of Talihina, was northbound on the highway, in a 2003 Dodge, according to the Highway Patrol.

A third driver, Larry J. Armstrong, 67, of Talihina, was headed north in a 2001 Chevy, the highway patrol said.

The accident occured when Ross went left of center on a curve and sideswiped the Dodge, then continued south and struck the Chevy, the highway patrol said.

Ross was ejected approximately 10 feet from the point of impact with the Chevy, according to the highway patrol.

None of the other drivers were injured, the highway patrol said.

In a Sunday accident, Kristina Owens, 20, of Wilburton, was reported in stable condition at Sparks Medical Center in Ft. Smith, Ark., with leg injuries, according to the Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred around 10:34 p.m. on Sunday as Owens drove west in a 2000 Ford on U.S. Highway 270 approximately 4.7 miles west of Wilburton, the highway patrol said. The Ford ran off the right side of the road, overturning one and one-fourth times and coming to rest on the passenger side, the highway patrol said.

Owens was ejected approximately 41 feet, according to the highway patrol.
