Letter to the Editor: Proud to be an alumnus

McALESTER — Editor:

By now, much discussion has occurred about the pros and cons of the upcoming McAlester school bond election. The details of the propositions have been presented to the general public

For me, this election is about community pride. I am very proud to be from McAlester and an alumnus of McAlester Public Schools.

Over the past 30 years we haven’t provided our schools with much in the way of funding for buildings. For many years, we have relied on federal grants and the generosity of several local philanthropists to construct our school facilities.

The flow of federal grants and local donations has now slowed to a trickle. It is time for us to be responsible for our own schools.

No one likes the idea of having to pay more in taxes, but I think most people would agree that something must be done to upgrade our school facilities. We are not in a position where we can continue to ignore our deficient school structures.

Great communities provide good school facilities for their children. This is an opportunity for us to show the rest of the state that we are one of those great communities. Let’s make 2011 the year that we finally do something about our outdated school facilities.

There are plans to cut expenses of government, yet cuts aren’t always justified and if they affect people directly, there is a lot of unhappiness. Plans to close the Social Security office in Hugo is a recent example.

The President is in Israel saying “we’re a democracy.” I like to think I’m pretty “up” on current events but I guess I missed this major change in our government.

You don’t need that!  We have been hearing a lot of that lately, mostly by the left, but also by the right. They are mostly talking about  semi-automatic rifles and large-capacity magazines this time. Of course, we don’t need them
