Letter to the Editor: Shocking news

McALESTER — Editor:

I have read your article on McAlester News-Capital about Alverson execution. I am a barrister here in Athens, Greece and as you may know the death sentence has been abolished in Western Europe since the 70s. So news of executions taking place in other countries is considered more or less shocking for us here in the Continent. But it was more shocking to hear that a substance which is used to euthanize animals was used in the execution. What I wanted to ask is why this substance was used. I gather from your article that the authorities ran out of the usual drug in early 2010. This may sound stupid but couldn’t they get any during the past months? Is it so difficult to find?

Regardless of any opinion one may have on the death penalty issue, it sounds awful that authorities in the States use on a person a substance meant to put down animals.

Let me take this opportunity to wish you all the best for the new year.

Best wishes,
