A strong protest

Editor:

I have to strongly protest the below portion of the story in your July 23 edition concerning the council meeting the night before.

Ward 6 Councilor Sam Mason, noting the brevity of the meeting, indicated the council could help with energy costs by holding shorter meetings.

“Maybe we could speed things up — and turn the lights off,” he said.

Those that saw the council meeting know that Sam Mason made a good-hearted joke. Those that did not see the council meeting could interpret it as Sam Mason actually being serious, or else take it as a smart aleck joke by him. It was neither, and I wouldn’t think anyone at the council meeting, or anyone watching on TV, would have interpreted it as anything but a good-natured joke.

I strongly protest the slant this newspaper often gives toward the things that good public servants say and do, and I will continue to do so. Hopefully, under the reign of the new publisher this kind of slanted reporting will cease.

This is not saying that James is not a professional reporter. I think he is. I’m more inclined to think the problem is with someone adding finishing touches.
