McAlester has lost a friend in the the Rev. David C. Knighton, along with several state Baptist associations and ministries. I cannot begin to list all the ministries, work and achievements he was a leader in.
He was a state and national leader in the Baptist communities.
He served his country 21 years in the United States Army, with service in Guam, Korea and two trips to Vietnam. I hope you took time to read his obituary, one of the longest ever printed in the News-Capital. I guess I could u se the word “shocked” as I read it. I had known Brother Knighton several years, but only as a friend who came to our Baptist Church here in Kiowa several times with his church choir to sing for us as he preached (upon invitation by our pastor, the Rev. Don Russell).
We returned the favor at his church, the East Star Baptist Church, where he served as pastor for 31 years. We met in McAlester several times over the years and would chat for awhile, but I only knew him as pastor of the East Star Baptist Church and nothing of his background. As the article stated, he loved his people and his people loved him.
He would help anyone if he only knew their needs.
I guess God thought it was about time for him to come home as he had served his country and his people for so long and faithfully.
