Sam was right

Editor:

I would like to respond to the News-Capital article on the front page of the April 13 edition of the McAlester News-Capital paper “Quick clean.”

I have lived on East Miami Street for approximately the last 40 years. Sam Mason lives a few blocks away on the same street.

I can verify that he is correct when he said that each time we get a big rain that asphalt washes down from the hill and collects in the low-lying areas (my driveway and my neighbor’s driveway).

I discussed this with the former Ward 6 councilman and nothing was ever done. I applaud Sam Mason’s efforts for helping with this problem.

I was sweeping my porch after the storms and dreading the big task of getting the asphalt out of the driveway when I noticed a street sweeper and a backhoe from the city in front of my home. I certainly hoped they would clean up the debris, but I didn’t ask them.

Then they pulled in and started picking up the asphalt. I was grateful for their help. It didn’t take them more than five to 10 minutes.

I thanked them and they left.

I know Sam Mason and I believe he was just doing his job as the Ward 6 councilman by representing the people in their ward.

Also, I certainly don’t believe he asked for any special treatment because of his position on the council.

He was taking care of a problem that existed for the last 40 years. Better late than never.

Thanks, Sam.
