Shirley Jean Wood

Shirley Jean Wood, 85, of Haileyville, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at her home.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Brumley-Mills Chapel in Hartshorne with the Rev. Jim Davidson officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Hartshorne. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of Hartshorne.

Born Dec. 15, 1923, in Picher, she was the daughter of Charles and Katherine (Schalski) Sublett. She and her family moved to Bisbee, Ariz.. at the age of 5, where she attended school until the 10th grade.

She worked as a telephone operator during World War II as well as working in a boarding house with her mother. It was there that she met the man who would become her husband, Roy D. Wood. They were married Apr. 21, 1945, in Lowell, Ariz.

Shortly thereafter, they moved back to Oklahoma to live in Dow. In Oklahoma, she was a mother and housewife.

She and her family moved to Haileyville in 1959 and remained there except for a short time they lived in Hartshorne from 1972 to 1979. Her last job was that of a foster grandparent with Haileyville School. She worked at the school for 14 years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Haileyville.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Virginia Wood, Sherman, Texas, and Doug and Anna Lou Wood, of Hartshorne; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Mike James, of Haileyville.

Also, three grandchildren, Staci and Shawn Curliss, of Hartshorne, Johnny Joe and Penny James, of Haileyville, and Darla and Bryan Fields, of High Hill; four great-grandchildren, Tabitha Ann and Whitlie Lou Curliss, Sarah Beth James and Madyson Fields, and three brothers, Johnny Giacoletti, Hearley, N.M., Dominic and Bernice Giacoletti, Safford, Ariz., and Victor and Beth Giacoletti, Pinos Altos, N.M.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy D. Wood; parents, Charles and Katherine Sublett; sister, Sharon Giacoletti, and sister-in-law, Penelope Giacoletti.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Joe James, Bryan Fields, Shawn Curliss, Gene James, Bob Davidson and Jerry Leighton.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Tinker and Keith Tinker.
