Gene Mordecai

Gene Mordecai, 70, of Hartshorne, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at St. John’s Medical Center.

Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home in Hartshorne.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Hartshorne with Pastor Kenneth Clay and Pastor Clarence Guthrie officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of Hartshorne.,

Born Dec. 9, 1937, in Hartshorne, he was the son of William W.O. and Iva (McCarroll) Mordecai. He graduated from Haileyville High School and served in the National Guard for seven years.

He married Carolyn Zata Spears on Dec. 31, 1962. He worked all his life as a mechanic. The last 12 years he worked side by side with his son operating Mordecai’s Dump Truck Service.

He was a member of Haileyville Assembly of God for the last 30 years and took great pride in serving as their Sunday school superintendent. He loved his church and all of his church family.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Eugene and Teresa Mordecai, of Hartshorne, Billy Dewayne Mordecai, of Hartshorne; three daughters, Marlene Mordecai Beene and Joe, of Hartshorne, Justine Mordecai, of Hartshorne, and Sommer and Donald Wright, of Hartshorne.

Also, grandchildren, Norris Sweetin, Ashton Mordecai, Katelyn Mordecai, Kendzie Mordecai, Tiara Burger, Miranda Rodriguez, Hayden Mordecai, Zaina Mordecai, Micah Wright and Mason Wright; two great-grandchildren, Kenon Sweetin and Kaci Ives.

And, five brothers, James and Frances Mordecai, of Hartshorne, Joe and Jerri Mordecai, of Bache, Vernon and Judy Mordecai, San Jose, Calif., Charles Mordecai, of Hartshorne, and Will Mordecai, of Hartshorne; two sisters, Thelma Hooper, of Ada, and Leona and Bill Glenn, of Hartshorne, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Alva Fite, Arlie Cloud, Benny Lawson, Doyal Wilson, Kenny McCarroll, Bobby Joe Guevara, Earl Wilson, and Bill McCarroll.

Honorary pallbearers will be Daniel Burke, Steve Darby, Steven Williams, Nathan Sparks, Billy Dale Spears, Clint Spears, Norman Dobson, David Spears, and Caleb Collins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
