Priscilla Johnson
Priscilla Christine (Lindley) Johnson, 90, of Harvest, Ala., died Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, at her home.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvin Cemetery Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Athens, Ala. Local arrangements are under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home of Holdenville.
Born May 11, 1919, in Lamar, she was the daughter of Miles Clifford and Lillie Priscilla Bell Lindley. She was the first born of eight children. She attended grammar school and high school in rural Hughes County, graduating from Gerty High School in 1936 at the age of 16.
She then attended college at East Central University. After attending a couple of semesters, she decided to become a nurse and began nurse’s training at Henryetta Hospital, where she worked for the next several years.
While working in Henryetta, she met Thaddeus Whitaker. They married and moved to California. She returned to work as a nurse at a hospital in a suburb of Los Angeles where they lived.
She later married Harold Mammen and he preceded her in death.
In 1964, she married Glendon Johnson and he preceded her in death in October 1989.
She was a nurse, school principal, accountant, Sunday school teacher and, in her later years, began working in healthcare as a private care nurse in Dallas, retiring at age 81.
Survivors include her adopted daughter, Stephanie (Nick) Perna, Huntsville, Ala.; grandson, Chad (Raenee) Whitaker, of Tulsa; two great-grandchildren, Azaleah and Zaiden Whitaker; granddaughter, Kerri (Kelly) McBride, Sandy Springs, Ga.
Also, brother, Elvin Lindley, of Stuart; sisters, Wanda (Elmer) Collins, of Norman, and Linda (Merlin) Ransom, of Enid; brother and sisters-in-law, Marlin Elliott, Waynesville, Mo., Deloris Lindley, of Calvin, and Leola Lindley, of Calvin, and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glendon Johnson; her parents, Miles Clifford Lindley Sr. and Lillie Priscilla Bell (Cosper) Lindley; two children, S. Anne Whitaker and Richard Whitaker; brothers, Miles Clifford (Pete) Lindley Jr. and Melvin Lindley; sisters, Hazel Elliott and Joy Smith; nephews, John Elliott and Billy Hardage, and niece, Paula (Lindley) Sharp.
