Carl W. Capers
Carl W. Capers, 85, of McAlester, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at his home.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Bishop Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Main & Oklahoma Church of Christ with Red Coleman and Robert Young officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.
Born Feb. 27, 1923, in Boswell, he was the son of Jesse and Maude Gilbreath Capers. He grew up and attended schools in Boswell and graduated from Boswell High School.
He joined the United States Army and served as a dental assistant in the San Antonio area.
He married Edna Mae Harper on Nov. 1, 1945, in McAlester. He worked at the United States Army Ammunition Depot in the Supply and Special Weapons Department for 36 years.
He was a longtime member of the Main & Oklahoma Church of Christ, where he was involved with the maintenance of the church and preparing the Holy Communion for every Sunday service for many years. He was also a deacon for the church for about 30 years and was also involved with Meals on Wheels for 25 years.
Survivors include his wife, Edna Capers, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joe David and Rebecca Capers, Poetry, Texas, and James and Susan Capers, of Pauls Valley; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Charles Hankins, Fort Smith, Ark., and Linda and Jerry Lamb, of McAlester.
Also, a sister and brother-in-law, Mazel and Bill Bullock, Houston; 12 grandchildren, Amy and Al Lopez, Mark Capers, Carrie Capers, Christopher and Kara Hankins, Laura and Heath Parker, Rachel and Michael Figueiredo, Jennifer and David Wehrlen, Patrice and Stephen Jedlicka, Matthew and Cyndi Hankins, Michael and Melinda Crouch, Jeromy and Nicole Crouch, and Ben Capers; a stepgrandson, Richard and Tina Lamb.
And, 10 great-grandchildren, Alea Lopez, Mia Wehrlen, Kelsey Crouch, Sophia Parker, Addie Lopez, Ryan Hankins, Brandon Cochrane, Ella Wehrlen, Taylor Hankins, and Mason Cochrane, and six stepgrandchildren, Bryce, Tristan and Connor Parker, and Nikki, Kailey and Kinzie Greenway.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers will be his congregational family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Maude Capers, and two brothers, Jimmy Newsom and Herman Wayne Capers.
