Rachel M. Stephens Pearcy

Rachel M. Stephens Pearcy, 80, of McAlester, died Thursday, July 3, 2008, at McAlester Regional Health Center.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bishop Chapel of Memories with the Rev. A.L. Mullins officiating and the Rev. J.B. Tanner assisting. Burial will be at Pryor Cemetery, Stuart, under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service.

The family will greet friends for visitation this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bishop’s.

Pallbearers include Jennifer Stephens Mendez, Al Hayes, Ronnie Lands, Jerry Wayne Lands, Ernie Halliburton Jr. and Jody Halliburton.

Born Jan. 3, 1928, in Stuart, to Tom and Geneva Howell Johnson, she attended school at Pryor. After graduation, she married Roy L. Stephens, of Atoka, on June 19, 1946, in Fort Smith, Ark. They moved to California where she was a homemaker. In 1952, they adopted their son, Kenneth Ray.

They moved back to Oklahoma and McAlester in 1962. She worked as a seamstress for the Elsings Ladies Clothing Manufacturing Company until it closed operation and she retired. She was a longtime member of the First Assembly of God Church of McAlester, of which she was very active. She enjoyed baking and sewing for her family and friends.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Ray and Hortencia Stephens, of Mesquite, Texas; a granddaughter, Jennifer Stephens Mendez and husband, Vincent, of Cedar Hill, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Alexander Roy and Jocelyn Josephine Mendez, of Cedar Hills, Texas; a brother and sister-in-law, Arvel J. and Sue Johnson, of Bache; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Raye Wright, of McAlester, Imogene and Tony Gearhart, of Liberal, Kan., Catherine and Ernest Halliburton, of McAlester, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy L. Stephens in 1972; three brothers, Troy, Roy and Foy Johnson, and three sisters, Alta Workman, Coy Lands and Wanda Mooney.
