Mamie Gladys (Brassfield) Grantham
Mamie Gladys (Brassfield) Grantham, 101, of McAlester, died Thursday, May 28, 2009, at McAlester Regional Health Center.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brumley-Mills Chapel with Mike Arnold officiating. Burial will be at Lone Grove Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
Born Sept. 8, 1907, the year Oklahoma became a state, she was the daughter of George and Molly (Ford) Brassfield. As a child, her father operated the ferry, the only method of transportation, across the Canadian River. Later, the family moved to the Scipio and Hanna communities, open-range area, and she spent the rest of her childhood there.
She married Jack Grantham on July 24, 1926, they lived in North McAlester for the past 81 years. She was a homemaker and an avid gardener. Her strawberries were prized possessions among her family.
She was a lifetime member of McAlester Main and Oklahoma Church of Christ.
Survivors include children, Eugene “Cap” and Martha Grantham, of McAlester, Molly and Sam Snyder, of McAlester, Jackie McBroom, of Edmond, and Virgil Grantham, of Oklahoma City; sister-in-law, Mary Brassfield, of McAlester.
Also, grandchildren, Estella and Rick Mask, Jo Ann and Bill Lincks, and Melissa and Derek Hoover, all of McAlester, Donna and Mike Arnold, Houston, Jack and Melody McBroom, Hemet, Calif., Janie and Don Leftwich, of Edmond, Tracy and Chris Carrion, Cupertino, Calif., Cindy and Les Brorsen, Falls Church, Va., Tim and Jennifer Grantham, Dallas, Kimbal Snyder, Rhea Ann and Fred Lee, Samantha and Clide Roberts, and Mary Beth and Craig Henson, all of Oklahoma City.
And, nephews, George and Claudette Lampton, of McAlester, Michael Bross, Tucson, Ariz., Bill Bross, of Oklahoma City, and Jim Bross, Portland, Ore.; nieces, Jan Brassfield and Carla Brassfield, of McAlester; 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack Grantham; a special cousin, Gladys Verner; a sister, Reba Lampton; a brother, Carl Brassfield; a son-in-law, Perry McBroom; a daughter-in-law, Jolene Grantham, and a grandson, Douglass Stovall.
