Verna Shepard

— Verna Shepard, 84, of McAlester, died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at a local nursing center.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill Cemetery in McAlester with the Rev. John Fream officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
Born Oct. 19, 1923, in Krebs, she was the daughter of Earnest and Mildred Shepard. She grew up in Krebs and had lived in the same house in which she was born all her life until a couple of years ago when poor health forced her to move to McAlester. She graduated from McAlester High School.
She began working at Pioneer Abstract as a teenager and worked there, at the same desk, for 66 years.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of McAlester.
Survivors include one sister, Edna Harkins, of McAlester, and two nephews and one niece, Stephen Harkins, Kennesaw, Ga., Paul Harkins, Dallas, , and Acel Lea Vincent, of Tulsa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a nephew, Raymond Harkins.
