McAlester, OSU alum earns special nod

McALESTER — McAlester High School alumnus Wilson Taylor, 29, will be recognized as Outstanding Young Alumni by the Oklahoma State University Spears School of Business in November.

The Spears School of Business will honor Taylor, along with a number of its most distinguished alumni, at the annual Hall of Fame banquet on Nov. 8, at the ConocoPhillips OSU Alumni Center in Stillwater.

Wilson is the son of Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice Steven W. Taylor and Mary Taylor, of McAlester.

Wilson is manager for the Oklahoma City Thunder Basketball team and was in Instanbul, Turkey, on Friday for a game against the Turkish National Team. The team — and Wilson — were to next travel from Turkey to Manchester, England, for an exhibition game with the Philadelphia 76ers, his father told the News-Capital.

“His mother and I are very proud of our son,” Justice Taylor said Friday.

Wilson graduated as valedictorian of McAlester High School in 2002 then went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in management from OSU’S Spears school in 2006. He earned a master’s degree in athletic administration in 2008 from OSU, where he was member of the OSU President’s Leadership Council.

Wilson got his start as a manager while attending OSU where he was a manager for the men’s basketball team for more than three years. As part of his graduate degree program, Wilson interned for the NBA’s Seattle SuperSonics basketball team, which would eventually move to Oklahoma City, according to a press release from Spears.

After completion of his master’s degree in 2008, he joined the Oklahoma City Thunder.

He is now the manager of team operations for the Thunder, assisting the team in all logistics, travel, equipment, team workouts/practices, player needs and game operation duties, both while the team is at home and on the road.

“His position as manager is a very busy ‘24/7’ job that requires total attention to detail and he enjoys every minute of it,” his father said.

“The statewide community spirit generated and the success of the team have been the great reward of his work. Wilson’s management and administration education at OSU, along with the invaluable experience as a manager for OSU basketball, fully prepared him for the NBA and the high standards required in professional sports.”

Wilson now lives in Edmond where he is involved in social and community outreach. He is a now a life member of the OSU Alumni Association.

According to the Spears press release, the Outstanding Young Alumni award was established in 2001 to recognize alumni who have provided significant service and achievement early in their professional careers.

The Hall of Fame event begins with a 6:30 p.m. reception followed by the dinner at 7.
