Motorist asks if arrest ruins chance to be a cop

LAWRENCE, Mass. — A motorist who cut off an unmarked police cruiser in traffic, a maneuver that led to a charge of illegal possession of marijuana, asked if his arrest would imperil any future in law enforcement.

"Is this gonna hurt my chances of being a copy?" asked James Acosta, 22, of Lawrence, Mass., according to arresting officer Gary Yancey.

Yancey said he was on patrol in an unmarked 2003 Crown Victoria when Acosta, driving a 2003 white Dodge minivan, abruptly cut in front of the officer's car to jump a line of traffic.

After he was pulled over, Yancey quoted Acosta as saying, "My bad officr. I was just trying to scare you. I didn't know you were a cop."

At his booking on driving to endanger, Acosta told police he had "two bags of weed" on the floor of his minivan. Yancey said the marijuana was packaged for distribution.
