Grammy-winning artist to perform in McAlester on Thursday night

McALESTER — A Grammy-award winning recording artist is set to perform in a benefit concert  Thursday night, Aug. 22,  at Life Church in McAlester.

Jason Crabb, who won the 2010 Grammy for Best Southern/Country/Bluegrass Gospel Album for his self-titled debut release, is bringing his band to McAlester for a full-length concert at the church, at 1300 S. George Nigh Expressway in McAlester.

The concert is a benefit performance for the Kiddin’ Around with Samson Relay for Life team, said Valerie Lalli, co-captain of the team along with Kristen Lloyd.

Lalli said the concert starts at 7 p.m., with the doors opening at 5:30 p.m. All tickets are $20 and will be available at the door, she said. Tickets are general admission, which means those attending the performance can sit where they can find an available seat.

In addition to songs from his “Jason Crabb” debut album, Crabb is also set to perform songs from his new 2013 release, “Love is Stronger.”

Crabb’s performances have won critical acclaim.

“He’s one of the most moving singers, for sure,” said Lalli, who characterized Crabb as absolutely passionate about his music.

Along with his Grammy award, Crabb has also won  numerous Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association, including  2012 awards for Male Artist of the Year and Artist of the Year.

In 2011, Crabb won a Dove Award for Song of the Year for “Somebody Like Me,” as well as a Dove Award for Traditional Recorded Gospel Song of the Year for “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” along with another Dove Award for Inspirational Recorded Song of the Year for “Joseph.”

In addition to his solo career, Crabb also performs as a member of the Crabb Family. He will be performing with his own solo band during his McAlester performance,  said Lalli. Concessions will be available during the concert, she said.

Those attending the concert should have a chance to meet Crabb at some point during the evening, said Lalli, because a “meet and greet” event is being planned.

Those organizing the event wanted to offer area residents a chance to have a hopefully inspiring experience while also helping Relay for Life.

Last Year, the Kiddin’ Around with Samson Team raised $35,000 and won second in the state in a fund-raising competition, Lalli said. This year, the team would like to finish higher.

Money raised by the Relay for Life Kiddin’ Around Samson Team stays in Pittsburg County, according to Lalli. Funds are used for things such as helping with scholarships for children who have had cancer, to buying wigs for women who have lost their hair because of medical treatment.

Meanwhile, Crabb has another concert scheduled in southeastern Oklahoma this week, according to his Web site. He’s set to perform at the Cupco Church in Talihina on Friday night, with that concert also scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

It’s a chance for local and area residents to see and hear the Grammy-winning artist up close and personal before he moves on to performing in larger venues. Crabb is set to  perform at the Brady Theater in Tulsa on Oct. 11 as Michael W. Smith’s “very special guest” during Smith’s Worship Around the World Tour.
