Italian Festival perfect with sun, carnival, food

McALESTER — After days of storms and wet weather, both organizers of and visitors to the annual McAlester Italian Festival were pleased to see Saturday dawn bright and clear. The mild temperatures and sunny skies drew hoards of visitors before the clock had even struck noon on Saturday, indicating that event Co-Chairman Bob Lenardo’s prediction that this year’s festival would be one of the best ever was well on its way to coming true.

With more than 160 indoor vendors, twice the usual number, set up in the Southeast Expo Center, the carnival and several more added attractions, there are more reasons than just great Italian food and community activity to draw visitors of all ages.

Contests of all kinds make up this year’s event, with many of the best being saved for today, including a children’s spaghetti-eating contest and a meat-ball rolling contest, scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by a karaoke contest at 2 p.m.

Both days featured a Texas Motor Speedway NASCAR Experience simulator and the Kansas Cosmosphere show.

In addition, the carnival games and rides continue through this afternoon, including pony rides, an obstacle course and a Euro-bungee attraction.

And not to be forgotten, the famous spaghetti, meatballs and Italian sausage meals, complete with salad and bread, will continue to be served through today, starting at 11 a.m. and continuing until 4 p.m.
