Kenneth Eugene ‘Gene’ Carr

McALESTER — Kenneth Eugene “Gene” Carr, 84, of McAlester, died Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at McAlester Regional Health Center.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at North McAlester Cemetery with Chris Taylor officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.

Born Dec. 2, 1928, in Oklahoma City, he was the son of Orvil and Oma (Butcher) Carr.

He grew up in the Oklahoma City area, graduating from Central High School.

Following high school, he worked as a traveling salesman for Transcon Truck Line, Miller-Jackson Company and a fishing and tackle equipment company, where he sold supplies to area marinas.

It was as a traveling salesman that he acquainted himself with almost every “establishment” in the state of Oklahoma. He continued to frequent many of these establishments, as the years went by, and enjoyed socializing with his friends.

He later had a 12-year career with at Oklahoma State Penitentiary, where he worked as the canteen supervisor, retiring in 1991.

He and his family made their home in McAlester in the early 1970s.

He married Norma Dean Lewis and they had two sons.

He later married Reva Laverne Wallis in McAlester. She preceded him in death in 2003.

He organized the annual Fish-A-Thon for area youngsters at the Youth Lake in McAlester, an event that continued for 25 years.

He made many Santa Claus appearances through the Elks Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He also enjoyed woodworking and giving the items he made to his friends, family and the community.

Survivors include his son, Michael Eugene Carr, of McAlester; brothers, Don Carr and wife, Atta Ray, of Midwest City, and Jay Carr, Albuquerque, N.M.; sister, Louise Acre, of Oklahoma City, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; the mother of his children, Norma; his wife, Reva Carr; son, Kenneth Joe Car; his companion, Bess Kirby; sisters, Lorraine Brown and Pauline Smith, and brother, Harold Joe Carr.
