McALESTER — Ila Mae “Rusty” Johnston, 93, of McAlester, died Sunday April 21, 2013, at a local nursing center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at  Brumley-Mills Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Russell will oficiate. An interment will follow at Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home.

Ila Mae “Rusty” Johnston was born on Feb. 3, 1920, in McLoud to Millard E. and Minnie (Basinger) Cummings.  She grew up in Greer County, near Mangum, and married John Leslie Johnston on June 11, 1938, in Greer County. They lived in the area until 1954 and then moved to McAlester  in 1963.  After a short time in Forgan they returned to McAlester in 1984.  

She was a huge sports fan, having played basketball in her youth, and rarely missed a McAlester Buffalo sporting event.  She was also an excellent seamstress and enjoyed doing crafts. She and her husband attended many church singing events where she was well known for her singing ability.  She was a member of Frink Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughters and a son-in-law, Carla House, of McAlester, Helen and Charles Allison, of Henryetta; sons and daughters-in-law, Leslie and JoAnn Johnston, of Beggs, Kenny and LaDonna Johnston, of McAlester; grandchildren, Julie Crosby and husband, Curtis, of Farmington, N. M., Marty House and wife, Kimberly, of McAlester, Michael House and wife, Lindsey, of McAlester, Matthew House, of California, Jeff Johnston and wife, Laurie, of St. Louis, Mo., Lance Johnston, of Edmond, Klint Johnston and wife, Stacie, of Ada, and April Key, of McAlester; great-grandchildren, Drew House, Danny Crosby and wife Debi, Derrick Crosby, Ashlynn and Kelley Johnston, Harley and Hunter Key, Aubrey and Ambree House, Alivia, Isaac, Luke, and Brooklyn Johnston, Levi Wilson, Jordan Prater; one great-great-grandchild, Lily Nicole Crosby; a sister and brother-in-law, Joy and Carroll Walters, of Fort Smith; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Sherrill Cummings, of Broken Arrow.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Leslie Johnston on Feb. 8, 1996; a grandson, Tim Allison; eight siblings, Irene Morris, Pauline Young, Syble Morris, Opal Hickman, Pearl LaCrosse, Warren Cummings, M. E. Cummings, and Patsy Cummings; and a son-in-law, Steve House.

Pallbearers will be Julie Crosby, Curtis Crosby, Marty House, Michael House, Matthew House, Jeff Johnston, Lance Johnston, Klint Johnston and April Key.
