Edna Mae (Harper) Capers

McALESTER — Edna Mae (Harper) Capers, 90, of McAlester, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at McAlester Regional Health Center.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bishop Funeral Service.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Main and Oklahoma Church of Christ with Kevin Wright and Red Coleman officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery in McAlester. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.

Born Jan. 21, 1924, in Antlers, she was the daughter of Floyd and Ollie (Evans) Harper. She graduated from Antlers High School, Eastern Oklahoma State College and Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant.

She worked for the United States Army Ammunition Plant as a purchasing supervisor, retiring in 1982. She married Carl W. Capers on Nov. 1, 1945, in McAlester, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 18, 2008.

She was a longtime member of Main and Oklahoma Church of Christ.

She was an active volunteer for the McAlester Regional Health Center Auxiliary for many years and up until her recent illness. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and had volunteered as a tax aide for AARP for the McAlester area since 1985.

Survivors include sons, Joe David Capers, of Pauls Valley, and James Capers and wife, Susan, of Pauls Valley; daughters, Carolyn Hankins and husband, Charles, of Fort Smith, Ark., and Linda Lamb and husband, Jerry, of Savanna.

Also, grandchildren, Amy Lopez and husband, Al, Mark Capers, Carrie Nimmo and husband, J.P., Christopher Hankins and wife, Kara, Laura Parker and husband, Heath, Rachel Figueiredo and husband, Michael, Patrice  Jedlicka and husband, Stephen, Matthew Hankins and wife, Cyndi, Michael Crouch and wife, Melinda, Jeromy Crouch and wife, Jennifer, and Ben Capers and wife, Brooke; step-grandson, Richard Lamb and wife, Wendy; 22 great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; sister, Marie Doshier, Galveston, Texas; sister-in-law, Mazel Bullock, Houston, Texas, and numerous other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Ollie Harper; her stepmother, Viola Harper; her husband, Carl W. Capers; granddaughter, Jennifer Wehrlen, and sister, Rosemary Harper.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Carlton and Bill Griffin.

Memorials may be made to the McAlester Regional Health Center Auxiliary.
