The Board of Directors of McAlester Fortnightly, volunteer club within the General Federation of Women's Clubs celebrated their 110 years of community service during the February Board meeting. This dynamic organization is recognized by GFWC International President, Mary Ellen Laister, with a Certificate of Achievement and personal letter from Laister congratulating McAlester Fortnightly for their 110 years of dedicated volunteer work in Pittsburg County. The Federated Anniversary was recognized on the GFWC International Calendar as February, 1904 through Monday, February 10, 2014. The signature project of GFWC is Domestic Abuse Awareness and Prevention. Thus, GFWC McAlester Fortnightly primarily donates their volunteer hours and funds to the KIBOIS McAlester Care Shelter for battered women and their children, Hope House homeless shelter for women and children, Youth Emergency Shelter for endangered youths and the Good Samaritian Homeless shelter for men. They are represented on the Oklahoma District 1 Child Abuse Prevention Task Force which presents a conference each year. This being on April 25, 2014 during Prevent Child Abuse Month.
