MPD introduces new column

McALESTER — The McAlester Police Department has undergone some changes in the past few months, with a new chief and several promotions. With these changes, the Police Department would like to try and get the citizens of McAlester more involved and aware of what is going on in our community.

We feel that the citizens of McAlester can play an effective role in completing our mission as police officers and make our city a safer place to live and raise a family.  

Due to the increase in thefts, the police department asks that you call and report any suspicious activity in your neighborhood.

Also, we will be running an article in the McAlester News Capital to keep the citizens updated on different crimes in our city and pass on information that may be useful for the public in helping us solve crimes.  

The McAlester Police Department has also added a Community Policing Program that will begin to implement Neighborhood Watch programs that will help us in deterring criminal activity and possibly even help us in solving crimes in your neighborhood. The program will be called McAlester Safe Neighborhood and we will be scheduling meetings in the near future.

Tip of the week: It is illegal to have window tint on your front windshield below the AS1 line. Officers are cracking down on this and the fine is $172. The term AS1 is used in the glass industry to mean “approved safety glass,” meaning it is double-layered with a plastic center. The line is the lower limit to which tinting can be legally installed. All windshields, usually on the driver’s side, say AS1 with a line beside it. That is as low down as window tint can go on the front glass. A lot of people are tinting the whole front windshield and this is illegal.
