Police: 'Bored' teens killed college baseball player

DUNCAN, Okla. — A college baseball player shot to death while out for a jog was targeted by three "bored" teenagers who simply wanted to kill someone, police said.

Chris Lane, a 22-year-old from Australia, was shot and killed Friday afternoon in Duncan, Okla., about 85 miles away from where he played baseball at East Central University in Ada, Okla.

Police Chief Danny Ford told ABC News that Lane was randomly targeted and shot in the back, left to die by the side of the road.

Three teens, ages 15, 16 and 17, were arrested Friday night on first-degree murder charges, Ford said. Their names were not released.

Ford told ABC News that the teens "were bored and just wanted to see someone die" when they spotted Lane jogging alongside the road.

Lane was visiting his girlfriend in Duncan, a community of 24,000 in southern Oklahoma. He died at a local hospital shortly after arrival.

Ford said no one witnessed the shooting but people heard a gunshot and reported a black car speeding from the scene. Surveillance video from businesses recorded the car pulling behind a hotel minutes afterwards.

Three hours later, a tip led authorities to spot the car at a church parking lot, with three teens standing alongside the black Civic Honda.

Chief Ford told ABC a search of the car "found evidence that made us believe they were involved." The Duncan Banner said a dismantled shotgun was found in the back of the vehicle but it was not the gun used to shoot Lane. That weapon has not yet been recovered, police said.

Ford said the suspects were uncooperative at first but later the 17-year-old driver of the car admitted they were at the scene of the shooting and that the 16-year-old pulled the trigger.
