Batman wannabe arrested for scaring his neighbors

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — Todd Kapcsos said he wanted to be the 'Dark Knight' of Moxham, the neighborhood in Johnstown, Pa., that fittingly bears a name similar to the fictional home of the original caped crusader.

The 19-year-old said he was tired of seeing crime and drugs on his neighborhood's streets, so he picked up a baseball bat, donned dark clothes and a long medieval-style black overcoat and went outside to fight crime.

Instead, police say the Batman-wannabe's "prowling" through bushes July 15 frightened neighbors into dialing 911. And Kapcsos now faces loitering and disorderly conduct charges.

"I was trying to make a difference," Kapcsos said, noting he was concerned about a group of heroin peddlers who often gather in an alley near his home.

"I wanted to put an end to the evil in Moxham," he said. "That's what the black baseball bat was for."

Police said they picked up Kapcsos after witnesses spotted him mask-covered and dressed in black, sneaking through people's properties like a ninja.

Kapcsos sad he was practicing "ninja moves."

"(He) actually frightened an elderly woman," Johnstown Police Officer Erin Kabler wrote in a criminal complaint.

Both of Kapcsos' charges are misdemeanors. This week he waived his right to a preliminary hearing, and he'll be headed to trial in Cambria County, Pa.

But he won't be dressed in his crime-fighting costume.

"They took it as evidence. I don’t think I'll be getting that back," Kapcsos said.

It doesn't matter, though, he said.

"I won't be doing that again," Kapcsos said. "I didn’t realize what I was doing was against the law."
