Buffs run-rule rival Lions

DURANT — The McAlester Buffaloes struck first. Then they struck again.

And again. And again. And again.

The Buffs banged out 13 hits and scored in every inning, run-ruling the Durant Lions 11-1 in five innings Friday at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex.

Coupled with a 2-1 victory in McAlester on Tuesday, the Buffs swept their regular-season series against the Lions, a district opponent and one of McAlester's biggest rivals.

McAlester improved to 9-5 overall and 6-0 within District 5A-4 with the win. Durant, which entered Friday's game ranked fourth in the eight-team district, fell to 9-8.

“Each game it goes in district becomes a little bigger,” Buffs coach Justin Bond said.

“We have put ourselves in a better position today than what we were yesterday by winning this game.”

Taylor Mullins led off the top of the first inning with a walk, then took second on a groundout by Zach Baugh. Mullins scored when Dalton Wood’s grounder rolled through Lions second baseman Tyler Stovall’s legs and into the gap in right-center field.

Wood took second on the error, then moved up to third when Brett Homer’s blooper to right bounced out of the glove of right fielder Brandon Maynard.

The Lions committed five errors Friday, leading to four unearned Buffs runs.

Following Maynard’s error, Wood scored and Homer took second on a balk called against Lions pitcher Austin Joines. A wild pitch moved Kabyn Kelley — Homer’s courtesy runner — to third, and Kelley scored on Brandon Green’s sacrifice fly to right to put the Buffs up 3-0.

“We didn’t pitch very well,” Durant coach Ron Norman said. “We didn’t hit very well. We didn’t play very well defensively.”

Mullins’ single drove in Grant Sontag in the second, then Andrew McBride drove in two more with a bases-loaded single in the fourth for a 6-1 lead. Baugh led off the top of the fourth with a single, stole second and scored two batters later on a single by Homer.
