Midweek Update: Kiowa reaches area finals

McALESTER — Classes A and B have held their regional tournaments, while Classes 2A through 4A have begun their district tournaments. Couple that with the end of McAlester’s Class 5A basketball regular season and wrestling Regionals, and you get that a busy week of local sports.

Canadian:

The Cougars finished second in their Class 2A district tournament, beating Wetumka 49-40 on Friday but losing to Dale 42-33 in the championship Saturday. The Cougars play Rattan in the first round of their regional consolation tournament Thursday at 3 p.m.

The Lady Cougars’ season ended with a 42-22 loss to Wetumka in Friday’s district semifinal.

Canadian baseball starts Saturday at home against Wetumka at 1:30 p.m. Slowpitch softball starts with a three-way series March 10 against Crowder and host-team Indianola.

Crowder:

Both Crowder basketball teams lost Friday’s district semifinal, ending their postseasons after one game. The Demons lost 81-48 to Quinton, and the Demonettes lost 64-30 to Hartshorne.

Crowder baseball starts March 11 at Hartshorne. Slowpitch starts with a three-way series March 10 against Canadian and host-team Indianola.

Frink-Chambers:

Both Frink-Chambers basketball teams made the Organization of Rural Elementary Schools Division I state basketball tournament. The Lady Falcons lost 44-40 to Lone Star in Thursday’s quarter-final, and though the Falcons beat Tenkiller 39-27 in the quarter-finals, they lost 41-31 to Oakdale in the semifinals.

Haileyville:

The Lady Warriors lost 61-42 to Gans in Thursday’s regional first-round consolation game, ending their postseason.

Haileyville baseball starts March 11 at home against Savanna. Slowpitch starts March 25 at home against Pittsburg.

Hartshorne:

Both Hartshorne basketball teams advanced to this weekend’s regional tournament. The Miners, given an automatic bye into the district championship, beat Quinton 62-44 on Saturday and next play Preston in the regional semifinals Friday at 8 p.m.
