McALESTER — When McAlester held its Freeze Out Tournament on Monday, the Lady Buffaloes’ singles players led the team to a second-place finish.
At the McAlester Team Tournament on Friday, it was the Lady Buffs’ doubles players’ turn.
Key semifinal victories by McAlester’s one- and two-doubles teams helped the Lady Buffs reach the finals, eventually finishing second behind champion Bixby on Friday at the Bob Brumley Gymnasium tennis courts.
In the boys’ competition, held at the McAlester Country Club and Chadick Park courts, McAlester finished third behind champion Tulsa Edison and runner-up Oklahoma Christian.
“The girls really showed up to play today,” McAlester tennis coach Chad Waller said.
“My one- and two-doubles both stepped up and won really big. I think a lot of that goes into showing how frustrated they were with their Monday performance.”
In a team tournament, a team’s four groups — one-singles, two-singles, one-doubles, two-doubles — play the four groups from another team, then one set of four advances based on how the matches go. Waller said McAlester is one of just two high schools, along with Bixby, to run this kind of tournament.
Nine other schools showed up Friday despite the potential for thunderstorms. Waller said the Team Tournament has gotten such a positive response from coaches that he could probably expand it to 16 teams and he’d still be able to fill all the slots.
The Lady Buffs faced Norman North in the semifinals. Lady Buffs one-doubles team Jennifer Amy and Rayne Key beat Norman North 6-2, 6-0, and two-doubles team Sydney Creager and Parker Tidwell beat Norman North 6-0, 6-1.
Lady Buffs’ one-singles player Krystal Hixson lost 6-1, 6-2, and two-singles player Preziosita Crawford lost 6-1, 6-3. But because McAlester’s doubles teams lost three games and Norman North’s singles players lost four, McAlester won the tiebreaker and advanced to the finals against Bixby.
