Buffs' Cannon wins state again

McALESTER — Win a state wrestling championship and you get your name on the wall of the Bob Brumley Gymnasium wrestling room.

Win a second state championship, as McAlester senior Donald Cannon did Saturday, and you have to be considered among the best to ever wrestle for the McAlester Buffaloes.

Cannon beat Tulsa Edison junior Aaron O’Brien 8-6 in the sudden victory period, winning a state championship in the 126-pound weight class Saturday at the 93rd Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association 5A State Tournament at State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City.

Coupled with a state championship at 120 pounds last season, Cannon becomes just the second Buffs wrestler to win multiple state titles.

Kyle Rosebure won four in a row from 1984 to 1987.

“I felt really good and relaxed going into that match,” Cannon said Tuesday of the championship. “A lot more relaxed than last year. Last year, all the big lights and the ceremony introducing the opponents was new. But this year, I’ve been there, done that.”

All 8 of Cannon’s points, he said, came via takedowns. He led 2-0 after the first period and 4-1 until late in the second, when O’Brien combined a reversal with a near-fall, giving him 5 quick points and a 6-4 lead heading into the third period.

Having failed to score an escape in either of his first two matches at state — both of which he won by 3 points or fewer — Cannon said he chose to start the third round in neutral position. Cannon took down O’Brien to tie the match, then did so again in overtime to win it.

“I just got caught once and got thrown to my back, and that gave him 5 points,” Cannon said. “But even then, we still had two minutes to wrestle. I wasn’t worried. I knew that going on my feet, I could take him down, take it into overtime and take him down again (so) I could win.”
