McALESTER — McAlester’s wrestling team scored 163.5 points and finished fourth at the Maverick Conference Tournament in Wagoner over the weekend. Donald Cannon led the way for the Buffs, winning the 126-pound weight class with a 14-1 victory against Will Tiger from Tahlequah Sequoyah.
The Buffs also got three second-place finishes from Dalton Rippy, Hunter Scott and Riley Smith. Those three, along with Cannon, make up the quartet of Buffs who made the 2013 state wrestling meet last season.
Wagoner’s Trey Ivy scored a third-period takedown to beat Rippy in the 106-pound weight class, according to a Tahlequah Daily Press article by Sports Editor Ben Johnson. Jay’s Derick Shrum pinned Scott at 3:38 of the 132-pound championship.
Though Smith hung with Hulbert’s Bryson McGowan for the first two periods of the 220-pound match, McGowan eventually won 7-1. While Rippy wrestled in the same class at which he made State last season, Scott and Smith both moved up from 126 and 195 pounds, respectively.
McAlester finished its tournament with consolation championships by Hunter Smith at 113 pounds and Kole Rollins at 170 pounds. Hunter Smith pinned Vian’s Anthony Chew at 2:17, and Rollins won a 7-2 decision against Poteau’s Khy Mote.
