Two Buffs make All-State Game

McALESTER — McAlester football coach Bryan Pratt will get to coach his son Caden one more time: the 2014 Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Game.

Bryan Pratt will coach the East team, which will include Caden Pratt at wide receiver and fellow McAlester Buffalo Jarome Smith at running back.

The OCA announced its selections last week. Its All-State Game will take place Aug. 1 in Tulsa.

Both players were also named Class 5A All Stars at their positions. McAlester cornerback Mason Bumphus was also named an All Star, and Coach Pratt said Sunday that if any of the seven defensive backs selected to the All-State team were to drop out, Bumphus could fill in and be able to play Aug. 1.

No players from local smaller schools made the All-State Game, but two Hartshorne Miners were named Class 2A All Stars: running back Dallas Herring and defensive lineman Cody Ward.

Last week’s announcement completes a winter filled with awards for all of the above-mentioned players and coach. Coach Pratt was named District 5A-3 Co-Coach of the Year, Caden Pratt was named District Player of the Year, Smith was named District Offensive player of the year, and Bumphus was named District Cornerback of the year.

In District 2A-6, Herring was named Offensive Player of the Year, and Ward was named Defensive Lineman of the Year.

Caden Pratt was also named to The Oklahoman’s 2013 All-State first team as a punt returner on Jan 4. Coach Pratt said Caden will be honored at the Jim Thorpe Award Banquet on Tuesday in Oklahoma City, where Caden will wear a tuxedo for possibly the first time in his life.

Bumphus was named a second-team defensive back for The Oklahoman’s All-State team. Smith earned Honorable Mention as a running back.

Smith and Caden Pratt were also named second-team specialists for the Tulsa World All-State team Dec. 29, with Smith making it as a kick-returner and Caden Pratt as an all-purpose special teams player. Quarterback Dalton Wood, wide receiver Cade Harkins and Bumphus all earned Honorable Mention for the Tulsa World team.
