Midweek Update: Two weeks’ worth of scores

McALESTER — With the Pitt 8 Tournament dominating both Pittsburg County and the sports pages of the McAlester News-Capital last week, here’s a look back at the last two weeks’ worth of local high school games.

All scores reported to OSSAARankings.com.

Canadian:

The Cougars entered Tuesday’s game at Kiowa having won four of their last five games. Canadian beat Oktaha 42-40 Jan. 14, beat Crowder 88-67 Jan. 17, then went 2-1 at the Pitt 8 Tournament and won the consolation championship.

Canadian lost to Haileyville in the first round of the Pitt 8, then beat Pittsburg in the consolation semifinals and Savanna in the consolation championship. The Cougars traveled to Kiowa with a 12-4 record.

The Lady Cougars have gone 3-2 in the last two weeks, losing 64-22 to Oktaha but beating Crowder 49-28. The Lady Cougars also won a consolation championship at the Pitt 8, losing to Stuart in the first round but beating Indianola and then Haileyville.

The Lady Cougars entered Tuesday’s game with a 4-13 record. Canadian next plays Thursday at home against McCurtain.

Crowder:

The Demons lost to Red Oak 77-55 Jan. 14, then lost to Crowder 86-67 Jan. 17. Crowder finished fourth at the Pitt 8, beating Savanna in the first round but losing to Stuart in the semifinals and Kiowa in the third-place game.

The Demonettes took an eight-game losing streak to Haileyville on Tuesday. Crowder lost 90-28 to Red Oak and 49-28 to Canadian, then went 0-2 at the Pitt 8, losing to Savanna and then Haileyville.

Crowder entered Tuesday’s games at Haileyville with a 5-12 boys’ record and a 2-15 girls’ record. Crowder next plays Thursday at home against Oktaha.

Haileyville:

The Warriors had won their last eight games heading into Tuesday’s games against Crowder, including beating Panola 60-41 Jan. 14 and Kinta 52-50 Jan. 17. Haileyville then went 3-0 at the Pitt 8, upsetting Canadian, Kiowa and Stuart to win the championship.

The Lady Warriors beat Panola 33-26, lost to Kinta 48-43 and went 1-2 in the Pitt 8. The Lady Warriors lost their first-round game to Pittsburg in the Pitt 8, beat Crowder in the consolation semifinals but lost to Canadian in the consolation championship.

Haileyville next plays at LeFlore on Thursday.

Hartshorne:

The Miners beat Stigler 71-53 Jan. 14, beat Allen 64-53 Jan. 16, lost to Pocola 70-56 Jan. 17 and beat Wilburton 55-31 Jan. 24. The Miners held a 10-3 record heading into Tuesday’s games at Talihina.

The Lady Miners lost to Stigler 51-33, lost to Allen 54-51, beat Pocola 38-36 and lost to Wilburton 52-41. That 1-3 showing dropped the Lady Miners to 6-9 as of Tuesday morning.

Hartshorne next plays Friday at Heavener.

Indianola:

The Warriors lost to Clayton 64-27 Jan. 17, then went 0-2 at the Pitt 8 Tournament, losing to Stuart and Savanna. The Warriorettes lost to Clayton 38-32, then lost to Kiowa and Savanna in the Pitt 8.

Indianola, whose teams still have just one win between them, played Schulter on Tuesday and next play Friday at Canadian.

Kiowa:

The Cowboys, ranked 11th in Class A, went into Tuesday’s games against Canadian with just one loss in their last 10 games. Kiowa beat Allen 68-41 Jan. 14, beat Savanna 66-33 Jan. 17, then went 2-1 at the Pitt 8 to improve to 15-4.

Kiowa beat Pittsburg in the first round of the Pitt 8, lost to Haileyville in the semifinals but beat Crowder in the third-place game.

The Cowgirls, meanwhile, hosted Canadian while on a 10-game winning streak. Kiowa beat Allen 68-50, beat Savanna 74-43, then beat Indianola, Stuart and Pittsburg to win the Pitt 8.

The Cowgirls, ranked second in Class A, took a 16-3 record into Tuesday’s games. Kiowa next plays Friday at home against Colbert.

McAlester:

The Buffaloes lost 57-40 to Durant Jan. 17, beat Ada 38-37 Jan. 18 but then went 0-3 at the Carl Albert Tournament in Midwest City. McAlester lost 68-59 to Millwood on Thursday, 67-35 to Norman on Friday and 74-71 to Branson, Mo., in Saturday’s seventh-place game.

McAlester still hasn’t beaten a 5A team this season, but it beat Muldrow, a Class 4A school, 68-62 on Monday.

The Lady Buffs beat Durant 43-39, lost to Ada 65-34, then won the consolation championship at the Shawnee Shootout. McAlester lost 68-52 to El Reno on Thursday, but beat Northwest Classen 46-38 on Friday and Southeast 54-44 in Saturday’s consolation championship.

The Lady Buffs then lost to Muldrow on Monday, 58-38.

McAlester hosts Broken Bow on Friday and MacArthur on Saturday.

McAlester’s wrestling team beat Ardmore 48-21 Jan. 16, lost dual-meets against Duncan and Western Heights on Jan. 21, then beat Ada 36-30 Thursday.

Those Jan. 21 losses mean McAlester will not compete at dual-state this year, but individual wrestlers could still qualify for the state meet.

Pittsburg:

The Panthers went 0-2 in the Pitt 8 Tournament, losing to Kiowa in the first round and Canadian in the consolation semifinals. Pittsburg also lost to Soper on Monday, 71-56, to fall to 4-14.

The Lady Panthers, ranked 18th in Class B, went 2-1 in the Pitt 8, beating Haileyville in the first round and Savanna in the semifinals before losing to Kiowa in the championship. Pittsburg beat Soper 49-25 to improve to 15-5.

Pittsburg hosted Stringtown on Tuesday and next plays at Panola on Feb. 4.

Quinton:

The Savages beat Savanna 56-36 Jan. 14, Keota 49-48 Jan. 17 and all three teams faced in the Porum Invitational Tournament. Quinton beat Panola 51-29 in the first round of the Porum Invitational on Jan. 20, then beat McCurtain 51-34 in the semifinals Friday and Keota 43-32 in the championship Saturday.

The Lady Savages beat Savanna 55-44 and lost to Keota 52-40. They also won the Porum Invitational, beating Panola 61-10 Jan. 21, Keota 50-26 Thursday and Porum 53-32 in Saturday’s championship.

Quinton played Red Oak on Tuesday and next plays at Clayton on Friday.

Savanna:

The Bulldogs lost to Quinton 56-36 Jan 14 and to Kiowa 66-33 Jan. 17. Savanna then went 1-2 at the Pitt 8, losing to Crowder in the first round, beating Indianola but losing to Canadian in the consolation championship.

Savanna also lost 58-38 to Oktaha on Monday.

The Lady Bulldogs lost 55-44 to Quinton and 74-43 to Kiowa, then went 1-2 at the Pitt 8 and finished fourth. Savanna beat Crowder in the first round but lost to Pittsburg in the semifinals and Stuart in the third-place game.

The Lady Bulldogs then lost 52-31 to Oktaha. Savanna next plays Stuart on Friday.

Stuart:

The Hornets, ranked seventh in Class A, beat Moss 70-45 Jan. 14 but lost to Red Oak 53-44 Jan. 17. Stuart finished second at the Pitt 8, beating Indianola and Crowder but losing to Haileyville in the championship.

The Lady Hornets, ranked 20th, beat Moss 67-19 but lost to Red Oak 74-53. They finished third at the Pitt 8, beating Canadian in the first round, losing to Kiowa in the semifinals but beating Savanna in the third-place game.

Stuart played Moss on Tuesday and next hosts Savanna on Friday.

Wilburton:

The Diggers beat Heavener 50-43 Jan. 14 but then went on a three-game losing streak. They fell to Talihina 63-24 Jan. 17, Antlers 37-23 Jan. 21 and Hartshorne 55-31 Friday.

The Lady Diggers, ranked 20th in Class 3A, beat Heavener 57-39, lost in overtime to Talihina 58-56, beat Antlers 36-27 and beat Hartshorne 52-41.

Wilburton played Stigler on Tuesday and next plays at Pocola on Friday.
